Trench Safety Stand Down Week

Trench Safety Stand Down (TSSD) Week is June 17-23, 2024. Since 2016, the National Utility Contractors Association (NUCA) has held this event to encourage employers to talk to their employees about trench safety and reinforce the importance of utilizing protective systems (e.g., sloping, shoring, and shielding) to safeguard workers from trenching and excavation hazards.

In 2022, 40 people died while doing trench or excavation work in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

TSSD Week aims to reduce the number of trench-related fatalities and injuries each year by providing as many employees as possible who work in and around trenches and excavations with information regarding current requirements and safety procedures. Last year, the event reached 25,800 employees on 2,487 job sites from 455 companies.

Certain industries and professionals (e.g., utility, residential and highway construction, plumbers, military, unions, associations, educational institutes and safety equipment manufacturers) are highly encouraged to participate. Companies can schedule toolbox talks with their employees or other safety activities that draw attention to specific hazards related to working in and around trenches and excavations. Hurricane Preparedness

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season in the Northern Hemisphere begins on June 1, 2024, and ends on November 30, 2024. It covers the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

Experts predict an active hurricane season with up to 23 named storms, including 11 hurricanes and five Category 3 or higher “major” hurricanes. In 2023 alone, hurricanes from the Atlantic Ocean caused 18 deaths and $4 billion in property damage.

Past hurricanes and personal experience have taught us that it’s never too early to prepare for a severe weather event. FCCI created these materials to help protect businesses and employees in the event of a hurricane.
